Madras HC pulls up Transport Corps on recruitment of crew

Madras High Court has pulled up the state Transport Corporations for not following the mandatory caste-based reservation in the matter of recruitment of drivers and conductors.

Passing orders on a writ petition filed by M Ravi, challenging his non-selection as conductor, Mr Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar, said the transport corporations were appointing the crew without notifying the number of vacancies and not following the reservation as contemplated under Rule 22 (a) of the TN State and Subordinate Service Rules and without following the uniform mode of selection. The corporations, being the undertakings of the Tamil Nadu Government, were bound to follow the policy of the government, the judge said. ''The attitude of the corporations seems to be that it is not bound by any law or the constitutional provisions, particularly Articles 14 and 16,'' the judge said and added that the government must ensure that its policy decisions were implemented at least in future.
